Reston, VA (October 6, 2020) – OM Group Inc. Chief Operating Officer Sangita Subramanian has been named to the AFCEA International Small Business Committee (SBC). In her new role, Sangita will help shape the association's small business outreach and programs.
“When I joined my sister in OM Group, I had to make a sharp turn in my thinking after working for large companies like Motorola and Blackberry,” Sangita said. “The challenges we face as a small business to grow and succeed were very different.”
“Organizations like AFCEA supported our growth. Being part of a community of other small businesses provided us with a forum to share concerns and strategies. AFCEA with its dedicated Small Business Committee listened to us and other small businesses. They facilitate outreach to government decision makers and impact policies that affect us. I am honored to have this opportunity to give back and support the next wave of small and emerging business owners.”
Tan V. Wilson, AFCEA SBC chair, and Heather Lacroix, co-chair, welcome Sangita as one of the newest members of the AFCEA SBC. The committee term, which formally begins at the October 2020 AFCEA SBC meeting, lasts three years. During this time, Sangita will be part of a diverse group of volunteers made up of AFCEA industry members and government representatives who enhance AFCEA's outreach to the small business community and cultivate partnerships among government, industry and academic leaders.
OM Group opened its doors in 2001 working small jobs in the private sector. In 2015, Chief Executive Officer Sowmya Hariharan turned the company’s focus to government IT services, starting with only five team members and $300,000 in sales. Sangita soon joined her in growing the company that today employs more than 90 people with revenue topping $18 million.
“We attribute our success as a small business to our ability to establish credibility with our customers by being agile, decisive and responsive,” Sangita said. “These attributes allow us to be a trusted digital transformation partner; a credible source that prepares our customers for the future; and a partner who adapts, transforms and grows its capabilities by investing significantly in R&D to grow our technical capabilities.”
